Melbourne hosts the 1956 Summer Olympics. Australian quarantine law has one objection: the Olympic horses. Their events take place in Stockholm five months earlier.

Documented account

Australia's quarantine rules had not agreed to host the horses.

On Thursday, 22 November 1956, the Duke of Edinburgh formally opened the Games of the XVI Olympiad at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

There was one scheduling detail worth mentioning.

Part of the Melbourne Olympics had already happened.

In Sweden.

Five months earlier.

Australia maintained strict quarantine requirements governing the importation of horses. For an ordinary sporting event, this would have been inconvenient.

For the Olympic Games, which expected international equestrian competitors to arrive with their horses, it created a rather larger problem.

The horses could not simply arrive in Melbourne, compete and leave under the timetable the Olympics required.

Moving the Olympics was also considered inconvenient.

So the equestrian Olympics moved instead.

Stockholm was selected to stage the 1956 Olympic equestrian programme. Those events took place in June—roughly five months before the main Melbourne Games opened in November.

The arrangement produced a geographical oddity.

The first Olympic Games awarded to the Southern Hemisphere were officially hosted by Melbourne, yet part of their sporting programme took place in the Northern Hemisphere.

Australian equestrians therefore travelled to Sweden to compete in their own country's Olympics.

Then they came home.

Members of that equestrian team subsequently marched with the Australian delegation when Melbourne finally held its opening ceremony on 22 November.

The peculiarity was not a ceremonial technicality. The Stockholm competitions were genuine events of the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games, with Olympic medals awarded months before Melbourne's cauldron was lit.

Melbourne nevertheless became an enormously successful Games and introduced another lasting Olympic tradition: athletes from different nations mingling together during the closing ceremony rather than marching only in national groups.

But before Melbourne could host the world, Australian law had established one boundary the Olympic movement could not negotiate away.

The athletes were welcome.

The horses had to meet in Stockholm.

Why WTF?

Australia hosted the Olympics, but Australian quarantine requirements meant an entire Olympic sport had to be staged in Sweden months before Australia's opening ceremony.

Historical verdict
