On Thursday, 27 August 2026, the United States government gave one of the Great Lakes a new federal name.

Documented account

One shared lake. Two official naming treatments.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing that Lake Ontario be renamed “Lake America” for United States federal purposes.

The order instructed the Secretary of the Interior, working with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, to update the federal Geographic Names Information System and remove references to Lake Ontario from that system. Federal departments and agencies were also directed to use the new name on maps, contracts, documents, and official communications.

There was one geographical complication.

Lake Ontario is not solely an American lake.

The international boundary between Canada and the United States runs through it. Its northern and western shores are Canadian; its southern and eastern shores are primarily in New York.

A United States executive order can determine what the U.S. federal government calls a geographic feature. It does not determine what another sovereign country calls that same feature.

Canada did not adopt the new designation.

Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly reaffirmed the historical name Lake Ontario, and Canadian authorities continued to use it.

The result was an unusual administrative reality:

the United States federal government had officially changed its own name for a major international lake, while the country sharing that lake had not.

Nothing happened to the water.

Nothing happened to the international boundary.

But the same shared lake now had different official governmental naming treatment depending on which side of that boundary was doing the naming.

History had not moved the lake.

It had changed the label.

Why WTF?

The same shared lake had different official governmental naming treatment depending on which side of the international boundary was doing the naming.

Historical verdict

History had not moved the lake. It had changed the label.
